7 Winter Play Ideas
1st of June and winter hits- Maybe you are like me and you know that getting outside is good for everyones mood, but maybe you are not quite sure where to start now that it's cold, wet and windy.
I am here to show you that we do not have to sacrifice that outside time just because the weather is wet and grey. So put on some gumboots, a coat and a hat and lets go and play outdoors.
My top 7 ways to play outdoors in winter
Splash in puddles- that overnight rain is great for the garden and a great gross motor activity as well. A quick and easy way to play. A change of clothes and a towel in the car and you are good to continue your day as planned.
Explore the beach- often we think of heading to the beach when the sun is shining, however venturing to the beach on a wintery day changes the whole experience. Go exploring in the rock pools and see what lives in there during the cooler months.
Explore the garden- plants change immensely during Autumn and Winter so get outside and take a look at the changes. You can always collect leaves, seeds and other nature objects that have fallen on the ground and use these in an artwork.
Waterfall spotting- after a big rainfall, head out to local waterfall spots and watch the water rush over.
Outdoor artwork- use some chalk and draw some pictures on the footpath or driveway and wait for the next rainfall to wash them away so you can start again.
Night time exploring- now that it gets darker earlier, you can investigate when it is dark without having to stay up late. So grab a torch and go exploring- look for nocturnal animals or watch the stars come out.
Fly a kite- wait for a windy day and go kite flying, if you do not have your own kite maybe you could build some paper planes and fly them instead.
The main idea is to not be afraid of letting kids get outside when it is wet and cold.
